INTENSIVE CARE EPISODES

One distinct ICU stay. One Episode ID.

This page explains how ICU DATA EXPERT distinguishes each ICU stay, maintains continuity during a temporary visit to theatre and assigns scores, ventilation, MDSi, documents and billing to the right episode.

INTENSIVE CARE EPISODES

Identify every ICU admission within a hospital stay.

A clinical record may cover an entire hospital stay while the patient visits the ICU several times. ICU DATA EXPERT reconstructs distinct episodes so each intervention, score and document is linked to the correct Episode ID.

Each distinct ICU stay receives its own Episode ID and all associated required information.
CORE RULE

An Episode ID represents one distinct ICU stay.

Hospital stay 12 days
≠
Episode ID 01ICU · theatre · ICU Ward / intermediate care Episode ID 02New ICU stay
For each Episode ID Scores Ventilation MDSi Documents Billing

Calculating the Episode ID

A temporary visit to theatre followed by return to ICU keeps the same Episode ID. Discharge to a ward or intermediate care closes the episode; a later ICU readmission opens a new Episode ID.

Assign stay information to the correct Episode ID

Scores, medications, ventilation, MDSi and documents are then linked to the same Episode ID.

ICU admission → Distinct ICU stay
Create an Episode ID
ICU → Operating theatre → Return to ICU
Same Episode ID A temporary visit to theatre does not close the ICU stay.
ICU → Ward or intermediate care → Return to ICU
New Episode ID Discharge closes the first ICU stay; readmission opens a new ICU stay.

Test complex cases

Theatre visits, discharge to another unit and subsequent ICU readmission: each scenario is assessed using its actual chronology.
