INTENSIVE CARE SCORES
Automate NEMS, SOFA, SAPS, PIMs and APACHE from clinical data.
Each score highlights a different dimension: nursing workload, organ dysfunction, severity or prognostic risk. ICU DATA EXPERT prepares data, applies the appropriate version and retains the evidence that makes each result understandable and verifiable.
CLINICAL REFERENCE POINTS
Five scores, five different views of the stay.
Each score answers a specific question. ICU DATA EXPERT automates the corresponding data and rules without confusing their purposes.
NURSING WORKLOAD
NEMS
What it represents: nine therapeutic intervention categories reflecting nursing resource use in intensive care.
When it is calculated: for each 8- or 12-hour nursing shift, depending on unit organisation.
What it is used for: measuring and comparing nursing workload at patient and unit level; it also contributes to the applicable DRG tariff.

ORGAN SYSTEMS
ORGAN DYSFUNCTION
SOFA
What it represents: the degree of dysfunction across six systems — respiratory, cardiovascular, hepatic, coagulation, renal and neurological.
What it is used for: describing the severity of organ failure and tracking its progression over time, particularly in sepsis.
Foundational publication ↗
SEVERITY · ADULT
SAPS II
What it represents: a summary of acute physiology, age, admission type and certain chronic diseases during the first 24 hours.
What it is used for: statistically estimating hospital mortality risk and comparing severity or outcomes across patient groups.

PAEDIATRIC ADMISSION
RISK · PAEDIATRICS
PIM3
What it represents: a paediatric model based on information available around the time of ICU admission.
What it is used for: estimating mortality risk and comparing risk-adjusted outcomes across paediatric populations and units.
Reference publication ↗

PHYSIOLOGICAL SEVERITY
SEVERITY · ADULT
APACHE II
What it represents: acute illness severity based on physiological variables, age and chronic health status during the first 24 hours.
What it is used for: stratifying severity and comparing patient groups or unit performance while accounting for risk profiles.

A score describes a risk or dimension of a stay; it does not decide for the clinician.
Versions, populations, calculation windows and usage rules must be respected. A population-level prognostic result is not a certain prediction for an individual patient.
FROM RAW DATA TO SCORE
The real challenge is upstream data quality.
ICU DATA EXPERT reconstructs clinical objects that do not always exist directly in the clinical system: ICU episodes, administered doses, ventilation periods, fluid balances and other indicators. Continuous upstream checks detect missing, inconsistent or artefact-affected data. This traceable preparation reduces manual work and makes calculations reproducible.

ONE RESULT, MULTIPLE USES
From checked calculation to action.
CHECKED RESULT
SCORE
✓
Clinical follow-up
Describe a dimension of the stay and its progression according to the score’s purpose.
Documents & MDSi
Reuse the result and its evidence in clinical deliverables.
Management & research
Compare populations using the appropriate version and scope.
SWISS DRG
In this document, SAPS + NEMS enable the coding specialist to identify the applicable DRG tariff, an essential billing component.
THE SOFTWARE’S ROLE
Automate calculation while preserving clinical context.
ICU DATA EXPERT complements the electronic patient record with a specialist layer: variable preparation, rule application, exception detection and evidence retention. A score remains an instrument defined by its reference framework — never an automatic clinical decision.
